Norman Vincent Peale was born at Bowersville, Ohio on this day in 1898. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston University, then was a reporter for the Findley, Ohio Morning Republic before his ordination in 1922. He served churches in Rhode Island and New York in the Methodist Episcopal Church for ten years before joining the Dutch Reformed Church to become pastor of the Marble Collegiate Church at New York City in 1932, a post he held for 52 years. He was key in bringing psychology into favor in the church, and published the classic The Power of Positive Thinking in 1952. Branded a heretic by some conservatives and derided as simplistic by intellectuals, he was a major voice in American Christianity in the 20th century.
