Issues Index | Next => On this day in 1618, some of the Protestant nobility of Bohemia were gathered to discuss their differences with the Roman Catholic Duke Ferdinand at Hradčany castle. They grabbed two Imperial governors and a scribe and threw them bodily out the castle window. They chose the wrong window, Ferdinand's men fell in a mound of stable sweepings and lived. The event is known as the second Defenestration of Prague and started the bloody Thirty Years' War. I don't have any quotes on defenestration per se, but here are a few on Windows.
One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon, instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. Rosiness is not a worse windowpane than gloomy gray when viewing the world. People are like stained glass windows: they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within. Then is what you see through this window onto the world so lovely that you have no desire whatsoever to look out through any other window, and that you even make an attempt to prevent others from doing so? But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It goes without saying that you should never have more children than you have car windows.
