Quotes of the Day for 21 May 2004 - Solitude

Two solitary historical events occurred on this day in history. In 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh landed the Spirit of St. Louis at Paris, France following 33 hours of solitude, the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Five years later, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to accomplish this. I don't know that either of them really had time for deep thought during the hours of their flights, but these quotes suggest that there is real value in spending at least some time alone.

Only when one is connected to one's inner core is one connected to others. And, for me, the core, the inner spring, can best be re-found through solitude.
     - Anne Morrow Lindbergh, 1906 - 2001

Talents are best nurtured in solitude; character is best formed in the stormy billows of the world.
     - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749 - 1832

Language has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone, and the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone.
     - Paul Johannes Tillich, 1886 - 1965

The best thinking has been done in solitude. The worst has been done in turmoil.
     - Thomas Alva Edison, 1847 - 1931

Solitude is the beginning of all freedom.
     - William O. Douglas, 1898 - 1980

If you can't stand solitude, perhaps others find you boring as well.
     - Mark Twain, 1835 - 1910
