Issues Index | Next => A few days ago I mentioned that I was in need of inspiration, quite a few readers responded with suggestions for themes. That wasn't quite the inspiration I was looking for, but it definitely can help trigger some thoughts on subjects that wouldn't otherwise have come to mind. Today's theme, Tools, is in response to a request from London.
If the only tool you have is a hammer, you are sure to see every problem as a nail. No human pursuit achieves dignity unless it can be called work, and when you can experience a physical loneliness for the tools of your trade, you see that the other things - the experiments, the irrelevant vocations, the vanities you used to hold - were false to you. Have thy tools ready. God will find thee work. An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board, and a wrecking bar at the site. We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every finger begins to feel like a thumb.
