Issues Index | Next => Daniel Frank Gerber was born at Fremont, Michigan on this day in 1898. I couldn't find much on his early years, but by the summer of 1927 he was married to Dorothy and their daughter Sally was six months old. Dorothy got tired of cooking and straining vegetables and asked Dan to take a hand. He managed to cover himself in peas before Dorothy suggested he should do the job in bulk at work, at the Fremont Canning Company. By the next year the company was selling strained peas, prunes, carrots, and spinach. Within twenty years, the company had changed names and was shipping five million glass jars of baby food every day. It seems appropriate to choose quotes on babies in honor of Sally Gerber and her clumsy father.
A baby is God's opinion that life should go on. Kids are cute, babies are cute, puppies are cute. The little things are cute. See, nature did this on purpose so that we would want to take care of our young. Made them cute. Tricked us. Then gradually they get older and older, until one day your mother sits you down and says, 'You know, I think you're ugly enough to get your own apartment.' A baby is an inestimable blessing and bother. The baby rises to its feet, takes a step, is overcome with triumph and joy - and falls flat on its face. It is a pattern for all that is to come! But learn from the bewildered baby. Lurch to your feet again. You'll make the sofa in the end. Our children are here to stay, but our babies and toddlers and preschoolers are gone as fast as they can grow up—and we have only a short moment with each. When you see a grandfather take a baby in his arms, you see that the moment hasn't always been long There is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies.
