Quotes of the Day for 12 April 2004 - Compromise

Henry Clay was born in Hanover County, Virginia on this day in 1777. On at least three occasions he engineered compromises in the Congress, including the Missouri Compromise, that kept the Union together for a few more years. He was called the Great Compromiser and the Great Pacificator. He delayed the War Between the States, he didn't avoid it, but that should have been expected from a series of compromises.

Compromise is the art of giving your opponent that which he is not powerful enough to take.
     - Harlon Carter

Compromise, if not the spice of life, is its solidity. It is what makes nations great and marriages happy.
     - Phyllis McGinley

Compromise is but the sacrifice of one right or good in the hope of retaining another - too often ending in the loss of both.
     - Tryon Edwards, 1809 - 1894

Compromise, n. Such an adjustment of conflicting interests as gives each adversary the satisfaction of thinking he has got what he ought not to have, and is deprived of nothing except what was justly his due.
     - Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

Virtue knows that it is impossible to get on without compromise, and tunes herself, as it were, a trifle sharp to allow for an inevitable fall in playing.
     - Samuel Butler, 1835 - 1902

You may either win your peace or buy it: win it, by resistance to evil; buy it, by compromise with evil.
     - John Ruskin, 1819 - 1900
