Quotes of the Day for 28 March 2004 - Absence

As many of you know, I make the bulk of my income from keeping computers running properly on Whidbey Island. There are a few computers that I keep running properly without getting paid, and there are a few computers that I maintain that aren't on Whidbey. Tonight I am absent from my post because I'm dealing with my mother's computer - which would be the rare system that isn't on Whidbey and I don't get paid for it. This is a little awkward for getting quotes out, and I am not at my desk where I can deal with subscription changes, but I'm going to give it a try. The theme will be Absence.

I was court-martialled in my absence, and sentenced to death in my absence, so I said they could shoot me in my absence.
     - Brendan Francis Behan, 1923 - 1964

It takes time for the absent to assume their true shape in our thoughts. After death they take on a firmer outline and then cease to change.
     - Sidonie Gabrielle Claudine (Colette), 1873 - 1954

L'absence est a l'amour ce qu'est au feu le vent; Il eteint le petit, il allume le grand. (Absence is to love what wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small, it enkindles the great.)
     - Comte de Bussy-Rabutin, 1618 - 1693

Wives in their husbands' absences grow subtler,
And daughters sometimes run off with the butler.
     - George Gordon Noel Byron, 1788 - 1824

To get something done a committee should consist of no more than three men, two of whom are absent.
     - Robert Copeland

Most of what matters in your life takes place in your absence.
     - Salman Rushdie
