Adolphus Washington Greely was born at Newburyport, Massachusetts on this day in 1844. At seventeen he joined the Massachusetts Volunteers and was wounded three times during the Civil War. Soon after that war he joined the Army Signal Corps and set out to learn what he could about electricity and built the telegraph network for the original Weather Service. In 1881 he volunteered for an arctic mission, leading 25 men to the furthest north point reached to that time. Because supply ships failed to reach him two summers in a row, he returned with only five men. For the next twenty years he strung wire in warmer climes, over 25,000 miles worth in Cuba, Puerto Rico, China, and the Philippines. Today's theme is Wires.
