Issues Index | Next => For three completely different reasons, I had requests for quotes on democracy, elections, and voting. (Katherine, I hope your slate sweeps the field today!) There has been a fair amount of voting going on recently, not all of it encouraging. But I haven't done a set of quotes on the subject since November of 2002, and won't get serious about it again until this November, so here's a handful of cynicism on the subject of Elections.
The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a chance to do something stupid. It is fast approaching the point where I don't want to elect anyone stupid enough to want the job. A Galileo could no more be elected president of the United States than he could be elected Pope of Rome. Both high posts are reserved for men favored by God with an extraordinary genius for swathing the bitter facts of life in bandages of self-illusion. The people who cast the votes don’t decide an election, the people who count the votes do. The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter. Vote early and vote often.
