Quotes of the Day for 17 March 2004 - St Patrick's Day

Patrick, Archbishop of Armaugh and Apostle of Ireland died on this day in 461. Today is Saint Patrick's Day, celebrated with kids pinching those who forgot to wear green, absurd stories of snakes driven into the sea, and a lot of newly green beer being consumed. (You won't catch me drinking green beer, but I might go for some Guinness!) Here are some vaguely-related quotes for the day.

I showed my appreciation of my native land in the usual Irish way by getting out of it as soon as I possibly could.
     - George Bernard Shaw, 1856 - 1950

Latet anguis in herba. (There's a snake hidden in the grass.)
     - Virgil, 70 - 19 BC

We Irish are too poetical to be poets; we are a nation of brilliant failures, but we are the greatest talkers since the Greeks.
     - Oscar Wilde, 1854 - 1900

The Irish are often nervous about having the appropriate face for the occasion. They have to be happy at weddings, which is a strain, so they get depressed; they have to be sad at funerals, which is easy, so they get happy.
     - Peggy Noonan

When anyone asks me about the Irish character, I say look at the trees. Maimed, stark and misshapen, but ferociously tenacious.
     - Edna O'Brien

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and, until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
     - Irish Blessing
