Quotes of the Day for 16 March 2004 - Resistance

Georg Simon Ohm was born at Erlangen, Bavaria on this day in 1789, the son of Johann Ohm, a locksmith with no formal education. Johann had, however, educated himself extensively and taught Georg and his brother mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy to a level well beyond what was taught in the schools. This did lead to certain problems when Georg later went to school. Georg supported himself as a math instructor, but didn't relate well to the education establishment and was frustrated with never getting what he considered a suitable position and salary. Following his father's example he had continued studies on his own, and began several courses of experimentation in electricity and acoustics. His work led to Ohm's Law, a basic statement relating voltage, current, and resistance that is fundamental to circuit design but was largely ignored at the time because of its mathematical basis. When his work was recognized, the basic unit of resistance was named for him. Today's quotes are on Resistanc, although not of an electrical nature.

The path of least resistance makes all rivers, and some men, crooked.
     - Napoleon Hill, 1883 - 1970

Only the extremely ignorant or the extremely intelligent can resist change.
     - Socrates, 469 - 399 BC

A dying man needs to die, as a sleepy man needs to sleep, and there comes a time when it is wrong, as well as useless, to resist.
     - Stewart Alsop, 1914 - 1974

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all.
     - Thomas Jefferson, 1743 - 1826

An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come.
     - Victor Hugo, 1802 - 1885

A champion views resistance as a gift of energy.
     - Michael J. Gelb
