Issues Index | Next => Lawrence Welk was born at Strasburg, North Dakota on this day in 1903. His Russian immigrant parents needed all the kids working hard to keep the farm going, but Lawrence suffered a ruptured appendix in 1914 that kept him away from his chores for year, during which he entertained himself playing various instruments. He fell in love with the accordion later, and promised his father four more years of work on the farm if the elder Mr Welk would provide the $400 to buy it. He struggled as a musician on the road from 1924 until 1938 when a fan said his band's music was "sparkling, light, effervescent, bubbly, gay, and happy." His music was dubbed "Champagne Music," and bubbles became a theme. My grandmother used to watch his show, I don't remember much but I didn't like the music, there were bubbles floating all over the set, and everything was "Wunnerful, wunnerful."
