I'm in favor of marriage, and have spent the better part of my adult life married. Yes, I intend that in both senses of the word. But not everyone agrees. It was on this day in 1074 that an ambitious man named Hildebrand, who had become Pope Gregory VII under irregular terms the previous year, excommunicated all married priests. (The rules haven't been softened much, but it seems unlikely the Roman church will be able to maintain their stance on celibacy and still have priests to serve all their churches for much longer.)
