Augustus Saint-Gaudens was born at Dublin, Ireland on this day in 1848, shortly before his family moved to New York City. At thirteen he was apprenticed to a cameo cutter, learning sculpture at a very small scale. Most of his adult life was devoted to larger sculpture, his first commission was for the statue of Admiral Farragut in Madison Square Park. His work was considered a breakthrough in technique and in portraying the spirit of American heroes. In 1906 his friend Theodore Roosevelt asked him to redesign all US coinage. He started with the ten and twenty dollar gold pieces. The high-relief Saint-Gaudens Liberty double eagle was widely regarded as the most beautiful US coin ever minted, but the artist died shortly before the first coins were minted.
