Quotes of the Day for 9 February 2004 - Running

Getting back to reader requests, one of our subscribers ran a half marathon last month and wanted quotes on running. Personally, I'm with Neil Armstrong and Satchel Paige on the subject. But I guess I'll get a little exercise picking out quotes on this exhausting subject.

Running for money doesn't make you run fast. It makes you run first.
     - Ben Jipcho

The lame man who keeps the right road outstrips the runner who takes a wrong one. Nay, it is obvious that the more active and swift the latter is the further he will go astray.
     - Francis Bacon, 1561 - 1626

I'm not running, and I'm not walking fast. I'm going where I need to be.
     - Johnny McEntyre

The generations of living things pass in a short time, and like runners, hand on the torch of life.
     - Lucretius

I believe that the Good Lord gave us a finite number of heartbeats and I'm damned if I'm going to use up mine running up and down a street.
     - Neil Armstrong

I don't generally like running. I believe in training by rising gently up and down from the bench.
     - Leroy "Satchel" Paige, 1906 - 1982
