Quotes of the Day for 30 January 2004 - Violence

Some days are better than others as I leaf through history each night, this is one of the bad ones. On this day in 1649, King Charles I of Great Britain was beheaded. In 1835 a demented painter attempted to kill President Andrew Jackson. In 1889, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria and his mistress committed suicide, triggering a revolution. In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, triggering incredible levels of violence. In 1972, British soldiers fired on a civil rights march at Londonderry, Northern Ireland, killing 13 Roman Catholics. And most perversely, in 1948 the centuries greatest symbol of peaceful action, Mohandas Gandhi, was assassinated at New Delhi. These quotes helped me deal with all of those events, a little.

When our hatred is violent, it sinks us even beneath those we hate.
     - François, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, 1613 - 1680

Much violence is based on the illusion that life is a property to be defended and not to be shared.
     - Henri Nouwen

Life is like a Merry-go-round. We can elect to go either fast or slow, but hang on tight because people do fall off, some violently, some gently.
     - Richard S. Drapo

Violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die; like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume. They are as sick that surfeit with too much, as they that starve with nothing.
     - William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616

If I die a violent death, as some fear and a few are plotting, I know that the violence will be in the thought and the action of the assassins, not in my dying.
     - Indira Nehru Gandhi, 1917 - 1984

Human kind has to get out of violence only through nonviolence. Hatred can be overcome only by love. Counter-hatred only increases the surface as well as the depth of hatred.
     - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, 1869 - 1948
