Quotes of the Day for 28 January 2004 - Pursuit

It was on this day in 1917 that the Punitive Expeditionary Force abandoned their pursuit of Pancho Villa in Mexico. General "Black Jack" Pershing had led a force of 4,800 troops since the previous April without success. Despite their failure to capture the bandit, they were hailed as heroes because Villa's forces were weakened to the point of offering no more threats to Americans living near the border. There are no bandits in today's quotes, but the theme is Pursuit.

     - Benjamin Franklin, 1706 - 1790

The pursuit of happiness is a most ridiculous phrase: if you pursue happiness, you'll never find it.
     - C. P. Snow

What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child.
     - George Bernard Shaw, 1856 - 1950

Where there is no desire or pursuits, there is no wholeness. But there are satisfying lesser states, fragments.
     - Gore Vidal

The pursuit, even of the best things, ought to be calm and tranquil.
     - Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106 - 43 BC

The English country gentleman galloping after a fox - the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable.
     - Oscar Wilde, A Woman of No Importance
