Quotes of the Day for 26 January 2004 - Australia Day

The First Fleet arrived at Sydney, Australia on this day in 1788 to establish the penal colony of New South Wales. Eleven ships under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip "transported" 736 prisoners. Perhaps not the most auspicious beginning of a new country, but it seems to have worked out pretty well. Just based on addresses ending in .au, I think we have over 100 subscribers down there, and I know they are not all convicts because a lot of them have addresses ending .gov.au.
