Issues Index | Next => A long time reader asked for quotes about overwork, and I'm not so overworked that I can't dig some up. Among the many quotes on the dignity, honor, and value of work, I did have a few that seemed to fit, and it probably is fitting that it should come immediately after the issue on pressure.
It is the steady and merciless increase of occupations, the augmented speed at which we are always trying to live, the crowding of each day with more work and amusements than it can profitably hold, which has cost us, among other good things, the undisturbed enjoyment of friends. Friendship takes time, and we have no time to give it. Worry affects the circulation, the heart, the glands, the whole nervous system. I have never known a man who died from overwork, but many who died from doubt. Work to survive, survive by consuming, survive to consume; the hellish cycle is complete. If a man runs after money, he's money-mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, he's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a ne'er-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets is without working for it, he's a parasite; and if he accumulates if after a lifetime of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life. Anyone can do any amount of work provided it isn't the work he is supposed to be doing at the moment. When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent.
