On this day in 1960, Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh piloted the Trieste to the deepest part of the world's ocean, Challenger Deep. This is off the coast of Guam, part of the Marianas Trench. Trieste rested at the bottom 35,813 feet (10,915 meters) below the surface. You thought your life included pressure? With seven miles of water overhead, Trieste withstood pressure of over 16,000 pounds per square inch.
