Issues Index | Next => On today's calendar, I note that astronaut Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr was born at Montclair, New Jersey on this day in 1930. Ten years earlier, Jackson DeForest Kelley was born at Atlanta, Georgia, and became the most famous doctor in space (Dr McCoy on the Enterprise). With those birthdays, and George Bush proposing a permanent manned settlement on the moon and voyages to Mars, today's theme just had to be Space.
Where there is an open mind there will always be a frontier. We shall have a race of men who are strong on telemetry and space communications but who cannot read anything but a blueprint or write anything but a computer program. When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with all other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty. There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew. The universe has fascinated mankind for many, many years, dating back to the very earliest episodes of Star Trek, when the brave crew of the Enterprise set out, wearing pajamas, to explore the boundless voids of space, which turned out to be as densely populated as Queens, New York. Virtually every planet they found was inhabited, usually by evil beings with cheap costumes and Russian accents, so finally the brave crew of the Enterprise returned to Earth to gain weight and make movies.
