Issues Index | Next => This is the darkest day of the year, the Winter Solstice. (Yes, I know that we have readers in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand for whom this is the longest day of the year. Feel free to this message for six months if you like!) The actual change of the season is at 7:04 am UT (or GMT for us old timers), just a few minutes before I composed this mailing.
There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. We all walk in the dark and each of us must learn to turn on his or her own light. Weather is a great bluffer. I guess the same is true of our human society - things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed. Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.
