He followed his father and became a writer, devoting his late teens and his twenties to travel and writing romance novels, although one assumes that the writing was rather better than what that genre offers in our time. The politics of his characters inspired his own entry into politics, he was elected to Parliament, served as Chancellor of the Exchequer several times, and was England's first and only Jewish Prime Minister. He brought bouquets of primroses on visits to Queen Victoria and flattered her outrageously, in return Her Majesty took the unprecedented step of attending her favorite Prime Minister's funeral in 1881.
Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action. Every production of genius must be the production of enthusiasm. Never apologize for showing feeling. When you do so, you apologize for the truth. Nothing can resist the human will that will stake even its existence on its stated purpose. Nurture your minds with great thoughts, to believe in the heroic makes heroes. The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own. Youth is a blunder; manhood a struggle; old age a regret.
