Quotes of the Day for 19 December 2003 - Humbug

I have something of a reputation as Scrooge. Partly because I have no sense of time and thus am always ill prepared, partly because this makes me crabby. The world was first introduced to Scrooge on this day in 1843. Dickens knew a bit about the desperate poverty in which the Crachit family lived, his own father had been sent to debtor's prison. His inspiration for writing A Christmas Carol? His wife was pregnant and he needed the money. Although I have gotten a few gifts from QOTD readers this season, I can relate.

Once upon a time - of all the good days in the year, on Christmas Eve - old Scrooge sat busy in his counting-house.
     - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

A good holiday is one spent among people whose notions of time are vaguer than yours.
     - John Boynton Priestley, 1894 - 1984

A perfectly managed Christmas correct in every detail is ... a sure sign of someone who hasn't enough to do.
     - Katherine Whitehorn

I can understand people simply fleeing the mountainous effort Christmas has become ... But there are always a few saving graces and finally they make up for all the bother and distress.
     - May Sarton

A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.
     - Garrison Keillor, Leaving Home (1987)
