Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born at Dijon, France on this day in 1832. After graduating from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855 he became an engineer with a Belgian firm, building bridges and railway stations. In practice for himself after 1864, he designed the Eiffel Tower and managed its construction. At its completion in 1899 it was the tallest building in the world at 300 meters (984 feet). He is also known for designing the wrought-iron skeleton of the Statue of Liberty. Here we have some quotes on Towers.
