Issues Index | Next => A long-time reader asked last week if I had any quotes relating to a fireplace hearth, as that was an element that she and her husband were working on at the time. Alas, I didn't have anything really helpful for her. I thought "hearth and home," but until they finish the house they really don't even have a home. At least Barb and Jeff's homelessness is self-inflicted and temporary, I trust those of us reading this secure in our homes remember those less fortunate this holiday season.
Having a place to go - is a home. Having someone to love - is a family. Having both - is a blessing. And what do all the great words come to in the end, but that? - I love you - I am at rest with you - I have come home. Home is the wallpaper above the bed, the family dinner table, the church bells in the morning, the bruised shins of the playground, the small fears that come with dusk, the streets and squares and monuments and shops that constitute one's first universe. Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in. The happiest moments of my life have a been the few which I have passed at home in the bosom of my family.
