Issues Index | Next => Each day this week I will select quotes related to one of the many blessings for which we are thankful. As I looked over a list of possibilities, I remembered the men and women serving abroad this year. Whether each of us thinks that intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq are good or bad, we can't dispute that thousands of men and women devoting their lives to service is, in and of itself, profoundly good. Whether that service is in combat or on a police beat, attending the sick or picking up the trash, this is for all those who labor in Service to others.
I know of no great men except those who have rendered great service to the human race. Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. It is customary in democratic countries to deplore expenditures on armaments as conflicting with the requirements of social services. There is a tendency to forget the most important social service a government can do for its people is to keep them alive and free. How can I be useful, of what service can I be? There is something inside me, what can it be? The service we render others is the rent we pay for our room on earth. I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.
