Quotes of the Day for 23 November 2003 - Wisdom

On Thursday of this week the US will observe Thanksgiving Day. It has been my tradition to dedicate the quotes for Thanksgiving week to our many blessings. (Those outside the US can think of it as Gentle Virtues Week at QOTD.) In honor of Alfonso the Wise, King of Castile and Leon (born on this day in 1221) I'll start with Wisdom.

A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.
     - Alexander Pope, 1688 - 1744

Clever people master life; the wise illuminate it and create fresh difficulties.
     - Emil Nolde

We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future.
     - George Bernard Shaw, 1856 - 1950

Never does nature say one thing and wisdom another.
     - Juvenal, Satires

He who knows others is learned.
He who knows himself is wise.
     - Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

We can be knowledgeable with other men's knowledge, but we cannot be wise with other men's wisdom.
     - Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, 1533 - 1592
