He started his show business career in the '40s, first as a singing waiter and then as a comic, under the name Jack Roy. It must have been less than a huge success, the next decade was spent painting houses and selling aluminum siding in New Jersey. He came back to the stage for good in the '60s as Rodney Dangerfield, tugging at this red necktie and telling us "I don't get no respect." Offstage he does get respect, he has helped launch a number of younger comics' careers at his club in New York and cable comedy specials.
Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear. Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized. I never make the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect. By common consent gray hairs are a crown of glory; the only object of respect that can never excite envy. Do not check your soul at the door when you cross the threshold of your workplace. Whether you are a custodian or a CEO practice work as sacred art. Respect comes not from the work you do, but the way you do your work. When one has never heard a man's name in the course of one's life, it speaks volumes for him; he must be quite respectable.
