It's a time to remember all who have gone before, but specifically to recall those who have died in the last year. Many of you will recall that my father died last spring, so I thought it would be appropriate to use Saints as my theme today. If you're curious, feel free to read the eulogy I delivered at his funeral after reading today's quotes.
A man does not have to be an angel in order to be saint. The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. The saint is the man who walks through the dark paths of the world, himself a light. There are but few saints amongst scientists, as among other men, but truth itself is a goal comparable with sanctity. There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life. But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint. So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be. To the poet, to the philosopher, to the saint, all things are friendly and sacred, all events profitable, all days holy, all men divine.
