Quotes of the Day for 31 October 2003 - Magic

Ehrich Weiss, better known by his stage name Harry Houdini, died in a Detroit hospital on this day in 1926. After a lecture at Montreal's McGill University ten days before, a student there asked Houdini if it was true that he could accept blows to the stomach without harm. Houdini answered in the affirmative, and the student punched him in the abdomen before Houdini could prepare himself, rupturing Houdini's appendix. Although in pain, Houdini refused to take time to go to the hospital. At his Detroit show he collapsed in pain on stage, and died later that night. Today is observed as National Magic Day in his honor.
