Issues Index | Next => As the sun went down over Whidbey Island yesterday it got a bit darker than usual, and not just because we were back on standard time. High winds had dropped limbs on power lines all over northwestern Washington, and tens of thousands of homes in four counties were without electricity. I don't mind reading with a camp lantern, but the computers were completely uncooperative. As a result, there were no quotes yesterday, and today's are on the theme of Darkness.
Science has 'explained' nothing; the more we know the more fantastic the world becomes and the profounder the surrounding darkness. As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being. An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it. I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars. We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark. The real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. Love is only the game that is not called on account of darkness.
