Issues Index | Next => James Alfred Wight was born at Sunderland, England on this day in 1916. His family was living in Glasgow at the time, and he was grew up and was educated there, graduating from the Glasgow Veterinary College in 1940. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1943, and served the farmers of Yorkshire as a veterinarian for fifty years, using the name Alf Wight. He started writing in 1966, under the name James Herriot, and published a series of books based on his work, starting with All Creatures Great and Small in 1972, which was also the name of the BBC series he inspired.
