It was the evening of this day in 1829 that police first patroled the City of London from their new headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place. Home Secretary Robert Peel had pushed the Metropolis Police Improvement Bill through Parliament, creating a new system of police protection for London, replacing a system based in the middle ages and found wanting as the city grew. The back of the building opened on to a plot of land called Great Scotland Yard. As the force has expanded into other buildings, and moved into new consolidated facilities twice, it has always kept the "Scotland Yard" name. In recognition of Peel's work, London police have been called "peelers" or, more charitably, "bobbies."
