Quotes of the Day for 28 September 2003 - Fire

You may recall my battles with the back yard over the last couple of months. With a lot of sweat and a little blood, I had stacked up over 10 cubic yards of blackberry cane and alder, waiting for the end of the burning ban here on south Whidbey. Today I spent six hours tending my fire, dripping a lot more sweat and a little more blood, and stinging my eyes with smoke, but the piles are gone. Here's to Fire!

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
     - Albert Schweitzer, 1875 - 1965

The fire you kindle for your enemy often burns your self more than him.
     - Chinese proverb

Whoever kindles the flames of intolerance is lighting a fire underneath his own home.
     - Harrold Stassen

When you do something, you should burn yourself up completely, like a good bonfire, leaving no trace of yourself.
     - Shunryu Suzuka

Fierce fire reveals true gold.
     - Chinese proverb

You must prepare yourselves, young people, because Uncle Dave's generation is getting old. We are almost ready to go to the retirement home to spend the rest of our days tapping our bedpans rhythmically in time to "easy listening" rock 'n' roll. We must pass the torch on to you, and you must grasp it, ideally by the end that is not on fire.
     - Dave Barry
