At twenty he was modeling in New York, started doing bit parts and stunts in movies in 1938. He changed his name to Clayton before the war, and focused on western roles after the war, putting a mask on for the first time to play the title role in "Ghost of Zorro" in 1949. Starting in 1952, he really only had one role, again wearing a mask - he played the Lone Ranger on the TV show and in two movies, not to mention countless personal appearances. Here's to the man in the mask, riding off into the sunset, Alone.
The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The man who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been. Certain springs are tapped only when we are alone. In any great organization it is far, far safer to be wrong with the majority than to be right alone. I am sure of this, that by going much alone a man will get more of a noble courage in thought and word than from all the wisdom that is in books. The right to be let alone is indeed the beginning of all freedom. An intellectual snob is someone who can listen to the William Tell Overture and not think of The Lone Ranger.
