Joseph Patrick Kennedy was born at Boston, Massachusetts on this day in 1888. He was ambitious as a boy, delivering papers and doing chores for neighbors. He graduated from Harvard and married the mayor's daughter, but had a long string of casual affairs and an extended relationship with actress Gloria Swanson. He imported liquor from Europe during Prohibition. He amassed a fortune in banking, shipbuilding, and motion-picture distribution, then became the first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission where he outlawed many of the tricks he used to build his wealth. He was named ambassador to Great Britain, but resigned after his opposition to war with Hitler made him unpopular on both sides of the Atlantic. His own presidential aspirations dashed, he devoted himself to the political careers of his sons, John, Robert, and Edward.
