Issues Index | Next => Today is Labor Day in the US, a day of not working to celebrate all those who work. Of course, some of us tend to work the most when "normal" people don't, but that's just part of the amazing diversity of labor in the modern world.
A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depends on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the measure as I have received and am still receiving. No man was ever glorious, who was not laborious. If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend. It is only by labor that thought can be made healthy, and only by thought that labor can be made happy, and the two cannot be separated with impunity. A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own persuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government. Labor disgraces no man; unfortunately, you occasionally find men who disgrace labor.
