Issues Index | Next => While I'm a great believer in education, sometimes schools aren't the place to get it. Most of the time I spent in school was a dead loss, although this doesn't reflect ill on the teachers involved, I just didn't fit. But I survived, and so did the schools, and I went on to get an education anyway.
Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality. A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car, but if he has a university education he may steal the whole railroad. I think that there were only two people in my high school that were comfortable there, and I think they are both pumping gas now. We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing. Patriotic societies seem to think that the way to educate school children in a democracy is to stage bigger and better flag-saluting. Grad school is the snooze button on the clock-radio of life.
