Quotes of the Day for 28 August 2003 - Books

I'm not in school, so I don't live and die by the school calendar anymore, but when I see subscribers changing their addresses from hotmail.com and webtv.net to something.edu I know that it's back-to-school time again. With admiration to teachers, administrators, and staff, and with best wishes to our more studious subscribers, I'll be running with an education theme for a few days. (It's also a lot easier than coming up with quotes marking today as the 166th anniversary of Worcestershire Sauce!) We'll start with Books.

Do not consider it proof just because it is written in books, for a liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen.
     - Maimonides

Experience has no text books nor proxies. She demands that her pupils answer to her roll-call personally.
     - Minna Thomas Antrim

Learning is acquired by reading books; but the much more necessary learning, the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading man, and studying all the various editions of them.
     - Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, 1694 - 1773

Books give not wisdome where none was before,
But where some is, there reading makes it more.
     - Sir John Harington

All that Mankind has done, thought, gained or been, it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books. They are the choicest possessions of men.
     - Thomas Carlyle, 1795 - 1881

We should be as careful of the books we read, as of the company we keep. The dead very often have more power than the living.
     - Tryon Edwards
