Issues Index | Next => As I've been battling to catch up with the exuberant growth in my back yard, I've used both grass and trees as themes. I've also been dealing with one of the most aggressive members of the plant world, the Himalayan blackberry. I don't have any quotes on blackberries, but looking at my arms at the end of a session with the shears and seeing all the blood where I've been raked by the thorns leads me to today's theme.
Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life's blood. But everyone has something to give. I am a world-class weenie when it comes to letting people stick needles into me. My subconscious mind firmly believes that if God had wanted us to have direct access to our bloodstreams, He would have equipped our skin with small, clearly marked doors. The savage bows down to idols of wood and stone: the civilized man to idols of flesh and blood. Now they show you how detergents take out bloodstains, a pretty violent image there. I think if you've got a T-shirt with a bloodstain all over it, maybe laundry isn't your biggest problem. Maybe you should get rid of the body before you do the wash. The thorn from the bush one has planted, nourished and pruned, pricks most deeply and draws more blood. I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.
