On this day in 1964, US President Lyndon Johnson signed an anti-poverty program budgeted at a then-alarming sum approaching a billion dollars. In his State of the Union Address in January he had said, "This administration here and now declares unconditional war on poverty." Here are a few other thoughts on the subject.
