Issues Index | Next => On this day in 1964, US President Lyndon Johnson signed an anti-poverty program budgeted at a then-alarming sum approaching a billion dollars. In his State of the Union Address in January he had said, "This administration here and now declares unconditional war on poverty." Here are a few other thoughts on the subject.
Poverty is the only load which is the heavier the more loved ones there are to assist in bearing it. People come to poverty in two ways: accumulating debts and paying them off. The poor man wishes to conceal his poverty, and the rich man his wealth: the former fears lest he be despised, the latter lest he be plundered. We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty. La vrai disette, c'est l'absence de livres. (Real poverty is lack of books.) Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.
