You may recall my mention last week of the back yard grass that had grown taller than I could reach. At the lowest part of the yard, this was eclipsed by a grove of alders coming up in the drain field. This week I acquired a chain saw, and with a sense of great power, brought most of those alders crashing down. I felt no guilt, alders seem to be tall weeds rather than trees, and I enjoyed the expanded view of the cedars and hemlocks behind. I also looked over to see a couple of neglected fruit trees in need of pruning, and even looked up some instruction on pruning them on the internet. All in all, I've been doing more than my normal thinking about Trees this week.
