Quotes of the Day for 6 August 2003 - Tennyson

Alfred Tennyson was born at Somersby, Lincolnshire, England on this day in 1809. After four unhappy years at school he was tutored at home, taking up poetry at a tender age. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge and became active in literary events of the day, but left without a degree. Queen Victoria named him Poet Laureate in 1850, succeeding Wordsworth. After turning down a baronetcy several times out of shyness, he accepted in 1884, becoming Lord Tennyson.

than never to have loved at all.

Words, like nature, half reveal and half conceal the soul within.

No life that breathes with human breath
Has ever truly longed for death.
     - The Two Voices

Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King-
Else, wherefore born?
     - Idylls of the King: Gareth and Lynette

Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
     - The Charge of the Light Brigade, 1855

And statesmen at her council met
Who knew the seasons, when to take
Occasion by the hand, and make
The bounds of freedom wider yet.
     - All from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1809 - 1892
