Icek-Hersz Zynger was born at Leoncin, Poland on this day in 1904, the son of a Hasidic rabbi. In time, the boy trained to become a rabbi as well, but he found himself working as a proofreader on his brother's magazine. He translated German works into Yiddish, was editor of a magazine himself for a few years, and then began to write of life among the Jews of eastern Europe. He moved to the US in 1935, changing his name to Isaac Beshevis Singer.
