Quotes of the Day for 13 July 2003 - Intentions

A subscriber wrote looking for the quote about intentions from Dr Johnson, we've all heard it but may remember slight variations. (It will probably choke quite a few e-mail content filters, but that's life.) Of course, I have more than just the one.

A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings, unintentionally.
     - Oscar Wilde

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.
     - Daniel Webster, 1782 - 1852

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
     - Dr Samuel Johnson, 1709 - 1784

It is difficult to say who do you the most mischief: enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best.
     - Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1831 - 1891

No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
     - Margaret Thatcher

When a man says he approves of something in principle, it means he hasn't the slightest intention of carrying it out in practice.
     - Otto von Bismarck, 1815 - 1898
