Born to wealth, the family fortunes were changed when her father was killed in Flanders during WW I. She went to work as a gossip columnist in 1920 and started her first novel the next year. By the time of her death in 2000 her 723 books had sold over 600 million copies. Her formula was romance, specifically set in 19th century aristocratic England, and she dominated the romance genre for decades.
Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze. The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If I ever marry, I'll try to forget the fact. Romance is everything. I want the concentration & the romance, & the words all glued together, fused, glowing: have no time to waste any more on prose. Children are incurable romantics. Brimful of romance and tragedy, we whirl through childhood hopelessly in love with our parents. In our epic imagination, we love and are loved with a passion so natural and innocent we may never know its like as adults. The best scientist is open to experience and begins with romance - the idea that anything is possible.
