Index | Next => Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born at Hillsboro, West Virginia on this day in 1892, daughter of Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, Southern Presbyterian missionaries stationed in China. She spent most of her first 40 years in China, surviving both the Boxer Revolution and the Nationalist movement of Chiang Kai-shek. She became Pearl Buck after her marriage in 1917 and started writing in the 1920s. Her second novel, The Good Earth, was the best selling book of both 1931 and 1932 and won her the Pulitzer Prize.
