And Barry Alan Pinkus (better known as Barry Manilow) was born at Brooklyn, New York on this day in 1946. They have little in common in terms of time, place, or style, but they all are known for their compositions.
The opportunities of man are limited only by his
imagination. But so few have imagination that there are ten
thousand fiddlers to one composer. The good composer is slowly discovered, the bad composer
is slowly found out. When we are writing, or painting, or composing, we are,
during the time of creativity, freed from normal
restrictions, and are opened to a wider world, where colors
are brighter, sounds clearer, and people more wondrously
complex than we normally realize. Life is like music, it must be composed by ear, feeling
and instinct, not by rule. Nevertheless one had better know
the rules, for they sometimes guide in doubtful cases, though not often. I have learned throughout my life as a composer chiefly
through my mistakes and pursuits of false assumptions, not by
my exposure to founts of wisdom and knowledge.
