Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born at St. André de Cubzac, France on this day in 1910. In 1930 he entered the French Naval Academy and trained to become a pilot until an automobile accident ended that career. It was during rehabilitation from the accident that he started swimming and first used goggles. During World War II Cousteau fought with the French Resistance and invented the Aqualung, the first of many developments for underwater exploration. To finance his oceanographic research he produced 115 films, giving millions a glimpse into his world.

From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.
